Letters from a Young Journalist

As our senior thesis, a group of seniors at the University of Missouri journalism school is examining how, and if,  journalism education should be changed to fit the new scope of our profession. The project is titled “Letters from a Young Journalist.”

Beyond speaking with students, recent graduates and professors, we would like input from recruiters and editors about the skills they expect from new hires.

If you would like to help with our research, please respond to the questions listed below in the comments section. If you don’t want your responses to be public, e-mail them to sarahd.wire@gmail.com. Also, the final project may be published, so please specify whether you want your name used with your responses.

Questions:
What skills are you looking for in new hires?
Do you think applicants have these skills?
Do you think applicants are well versed in ethics, etc.?
How has the quality of internships at your publication changed?
What do you think journalism schools should be doing differently?
What is your educational background?

Thank you, Sarah D. Wire, BJ December ‘09
